The Russian Orthodox Church Abroad officially reunited with the Russian Orthodox Church on May 17, following 80 years of separation sparked by the Bolshevik Revolution.
Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Alexy II and the head of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, Metropolitan Lavry, led the reunification ceremony.
Lavy emphasized that the reunion of the churches is not a merger, as the Orthodox Church outside Russia would maintain its autonomy and appoint its own hierarchy. The ceremony, held in Moscow, was attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin. (http://www.stratfor.com)
