Treasures of Saint-Petersburg
Peterhof is the splendid summer residence of the Romanov Dynasty. The idea to create a residence as luxurious as the famous Versailles in France occurred to Peter I in 1714.The Emperor himself was responsible for the design of the palace and of the surrounding parks, as well as for the idea of many fountains. The construction of the entire ensemble went on for two centuries.Peterhof's palaces house a rich collection of paintings and applied art of the 17th and 18th centuries.
The parks of Peterhof cover an area of around 2500 acres and are decorated with elegant statues and ornate fountains.
